    Finder:

    - Have an address bar so I can copy and paste file locations. Really useful to a developer, especially with working between the Finder and Terminal.

    - Have a way of seeing how much disk space directories and their children take up, both with number sizes and graphically.

    - Stop freaking putting every downloaded file in the bottom right of my Desktop, on top of the last downloaded file. Put the icon anywhere else on the free half of my Desktop.

    - If I empty the trash, I expect to see that volume's space taken or available value update right away for its icon, on the Desktop.

    - Tabbed Finder windows?

I'm with you all the way on this.

On the download, right-click yr desktop and click keep arranged by ...whatever you like... to prevent from the downloads stacking up eachother

I have a 7d and I was wondering how important cf card speed is
    currently i have a transcend 16gb 400x .. says the write speed is 30mbps ..
is that fast enough because I see lexar has 600x cards with 90mbps write ..
on cinema5d.com most of them use kingston 133x .. I guess that just answers my question but I wanted to get some opinions here

Sounds like you should be looking at an iMac.

As stated before, I want and need the expansion of the Mac Pro.

My own reason for getting my Mac Pro (2008 Octo Core) was that I intend the keep the computer for 3 - 5 years. Now that I'm just starting my 3rd year I'm confident that I can hit the 5 year mark. My personal feelings are that Mac Pros are for long-term ownership. At least for us small businesses. I know some big corps swap them out every couple of years.

iMacs are a better value for the computing power, but I don't believe they are suitable for long-term ownership. I don't actually think they are hard to expand, if you don't mind a stack of FW 800 HDDs.

Photo editing doesn't actually require a fantastic video card. It just needs to display accurate colour. More expensive cards are for gaming and movies, where things are moving at a rapid rate. If you don't do those things, then I don't believe you need to worry about upgrading the video card.

    Memory is another matter.

Mac Pros support more, except for perhaps a small overlap between the low-end MP and high-end iMac (don't know that for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me). Time moves on, applications demand more RAM. I know that my MP still has lots and lots of expansion left in that department. Incidentally, giving your OS, Applications, etc enough RAM is the single most effective way to speed up your workflow. The moment you start writing to virtual memory you are start bogging down.

One thing to keep in mind is that for Mac Pros, you get a RAM slot per processor. So, all other things being equal (same type of architecture in the MP) an 8 core MP can handle more RAM than a 6 core, and a 4 core can handle the least. Do some research on your RAM needs (current and future) before jumping on an 8 core machine just for the RAM ceiling. You very likely will never need that much. But... there it is.

A Mac Pro is also more easily fixed, I believe. Something to consider if you are thinking long-term.

Apple promised something called Grand Central Dispatch in 2010 or yet to be delivered. Check it out on the Apple site. It promised to make it easier for application developers to multi-thread their programs. Photo editing suites are not really taking advantage of this, yet. But if they ever do an older multi-cored machine should stay current for a few more years.

My thinking is: If you want to get a really good machine now, and think you'll be getting another one in a 1-3 years then go iMac. When you buy peripherals for it, make sure that they will also work on a Mac Pro, so you can upgrade easily.

If you want a machine for 3-5 years, then think Mac Pro. More $$ up front, but I think you will save money over the 5 years.

Just some more grist for your mill.

everything here is, imho, of course....

I havent gotten my ipod yet.. but i will be soon, so i am trying to upload my CDs on my powerbook in itunes. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what apple lossless is in general terms and how it works? I am still kinda new to Macs so could you explain it fully. I noticed that after I imported my CD, I would go to the advanced menu in itunes and selected convert to apple lossless... it then converted my files. I went into my music folder that holds all my files and i see that i have 2 of everything I converted with apple lossless. The file extentions are the same sooo... what is going on here. I would like to know also if converting my songs to this format will allow me to have more room on my ipod???? What is the positive and negatives of this converting? I just need someone to explain this whole apple lossless idea to me and what it does. Thanx in advanced! ;) :)

I am getting the same error message as shown below. I have a Linksys router and have done the port forwarding properly. I think this has to do with GRE packets, but I am not sure what is to be done now. Btw I am trying this out with my iMac and iphone.

I am also trying to set up a vpn tunnel so that I can view my cablevision channels on my Ipad while away from home. I followed the instructions but can't get it to work. I am using EASYVPN on an IMAC , but when i try to connect from my Ipad, i get the following messages logged in EasyVPN

It looks like Apple may not be doing pre-orders or reservations this time which makes me think I'll have to go Thursday night. Anyone else planning on staying over Thursday night or going really early Friday morning?

I won't offer any advice on size since that's a bit subjective but I will offer some advice on backup. When deciding what size and how many drives to buy spend most of your time thinking about your backup plan. Once you've settled on that then go get the drives.

I recently lost the 500gb drive in my 07 iMac. That's where my Aperture library was. My advice on backup is to keep it simple and redundant. I don't archive SD cards nor save non-keepers. What I did though was let Time Machine backup my Aperture Library (I manage all photos in Aperture) and I kept Aperture vaults on two seperate external hardrives. (So there are 4 drives involved already...5 if you count the one I left at my parents over Christmas as an offsite). Moral of the story. I put a new HD in the iMac (1TB WD Cavier Green) and got back every single bit of data and every photo with no issues. Luckily I had updated the vaults and had not taken any new photos before the HD crash.

BTW, I do the same for family home movies. They are all digital and the thought of loosing them is unfathomable.

Personally I believe a backup strategy is priority one no matter if you are noob or a seasoned pro. Those shots mean something to you and if you loose them they are gone forever.

Right now, I have copied all of my photos and videos to cds and dvds, so I here ya that protecting one's 'family memories' are priority. However, with a vast collection, do photographers burn photos and videos to discs? I think a Blu-Ray player would help since they hold up to 25 GB and 48 GB or so respectfully. Can an individual burn non-HD content to Blu-Ray discs? I should research before I assume!

Also, as of now, I save non-keepers, but I do not have a lot of photos. At least not yet. :D Although, I have deleted photos, but I still have some blurry photos and crappy videos.

Thanks for reiterating the importance of a backup plan!

No surprise since their intentions became obvious when they backpeddled over earlier comments made by a spokesperson during MWSF '06 after the keynote and also the subsequent length of time "spent evaluating" the feasibility while Parallels came in with an actual product. VMWare's confirmation they were entering the Mac market probably killed any remaining consideration.

"I just don't know what the hell I'm doing. Help! I need Help!"
Something was missing in that attachment....:D

Ok. Ok. The damn thing is a fake. How do I know, because an apple rep from the apple store came in the night of the Jaguar release and informed me that four former apple designers came up with the hoax. They built a plastic rendition using a computer and a laser cutter. They then superimposed the newton OS onto the face of the device. The person writing was writing on a the screen, but it was the newton doing all the work. The reason why it looks a little different is they just adjusted the colors and some of the icons to meet a more "OSX" look. Man..that sucks. I know... I know...I should have known, but damn.

    Peace.

Have newly acquired similar poor performance with full screen hulu on the family's mac mini (9400 video).

Only fix I have figured out that works for me was installing the older FireFox 3.6.xx (right along with FF4) and with the older FF, full screen flash works as it did in the past, i.e. Great.

Try it and let me know if this workd for you.

Where does this healthy free market exist?

    It sure isn't America.

    Oh yes, Canada as well.

Competition is but a fond, or arcane, memory.
